Does everything I need it to, with minor problems

I've been using Windows XP for years, so this is the first Mac I've had in a long time. I have the basic second-generation Macbook Pro model (with the Intel Core 2 Duo), and it's fast, sleek, and reliable. If OS X could be summed up in a single word, it would either be 'simple' or 'intuitive'... I'm torn between them. For example, I had locked files in the trash that refused to be thrown away. In Windows, this can often become an annoying problem. In OS X, all you have to do is hold down the option key as you click on the menu where it says "empty trash," and it force-deletes the files.

The reason I have this Mac is for music software. Reason, Logic, ProTools, Finale, Audacity, Digital Performer... even Garageband. All programs can be run flawlessly. Even a bunch of them can be run together. Reason, which can be a very CPU-intensive program, never gave me problems, even when I was playing a track with 20 different parts.
I honestly have to say that Finder is a much better way to organize files than Windows Explorer. Everything seems so much simpler.

Let's see... there's also the wonderful Dashboard, which is a widget engine that can be summoned with a single click. Also, Dashboard allows you to press f10, f11, and f12 to allow you to see all windows simultaneously (after which you can click one to get to it), or clear all windows to the sides so you can see/use the desktop (I don't use whatever the third function is).

Now, as for the cons: the first is price. Way too expensive. I can get a Windows laptop with equal specs (or better) for a much lower price. Some say the difference is worth the price. No, it's not. So I'm paying at least several hundred dollars more for a different operating system? Even the nice, aluminum body of the Macbook Pro isn't worth all the extra money.

Second con: OS X is just as prone to random extended loading times and freezing as XP. There have been a few times where OS X has just frozen (or nothing happened when I clicked anything), and lots of times when the loading "beachball" is present for far longer than it should be. Thankfully, a restart has always solved all of these issues. However, they shouldn't be present in the first place, especially when I'm not doing anything at all hardware-intensive.

Overall, I'd have to say that the Macbook Pro and OS X are both very pleasant experiences. OS X is an amazing operating system that often just works when you want it to, and is perfect for anyone who isn't too familiar with computers. Better than XP? In most ways, yes. Doesn't quite have the compatibility (I miss my games!), but it makes up for it in all other aspects. I'm taking off two points from the perfect 10 for behaving like XP in terms of random problems, and the cost. If you're willing to spend the money, and you don't mind the minor random problem, then this computer is perfect for you.

Handles CS3 with ease and is one of the few laptops that can handle both the Mac OS and Windows. Happily purs along with 10.5.1 and XP SP2 (for Half Life 2 ;)

Very nice computer

No problems with it at all, served me very well throughout this first semester of the college year. Would highly recommend it to anyone, especially now that it's so easy to install Windows on it as well if you want.

Pretty Good

An Overall great device, especially for first-timers in the computer or laptop world. The IBook has almost everything you need to get started. It has smart wizard guides to help you through setup and installation. One major advantage of the IBook is that it almost never gets viruses. However, one problem with the IBook (and one of the only ones that I've found) is that it does not come with a paint applicatiton. But one can acquire this through various websites that they can find on google.com. Well done Apple, great success!

Great Reliable Computer

I loved my iBook G4. I got it for my birthday about 3 years ago. It gave me some trouble with it's small HDD but a quick upgrade of storage and another stick of RAM and it ran like a charm.

It is capable of handling much more than you think and can run a multitude of programs. It can even support two monitors given the proper conditions. It can be modified greatly and is very lightweight and usable.

Bad things about it is that it tends to run pretty hot and battery life drops pretty steeply from the initial 4 hours to 3-2. The monitor can get pretty worn out and hotspots can form.

It can still contend with the current MacBooks but not the MBP's. If you want a good reliable book, then get this one as new as you can.

Well, the first contact i had with an apple machine was on an Apple MacBook. It wasn't mine, but a friend borrowed it to me for a week. I can say the results were outstanding for one like me, who has alway worked with a windows OS. Mac it's a pretty powerful platform, and combined with a respectable processor and the glossy screen it can have incredible results.
I loved the way it renderes colors, it's truly the perfect solution for a digital lifestyle.

Thumbsup !

Apple released out another power filled but tremendeously good looking laptop with everything you get in a desktop compacted down for life on the open road. Just look at one of these babies and you'll wish it were your own. Open it's curved screen flap and you'll be totally entthrawled with it.

Just Love Using this

I was previously using Vaio, but when suggested by a friend to use a MacBook, i thought i should use it.
It is just perfect and it more than what i expected. Although many applications fail to open in it as OS is not windows, but there is a solution for that too. You can integrate shared Windows OS i.e. XP or Windows Vista along with Mac OS. The speed is one more big advantage, 10 times faster than the normal Windows laptops.

Errr.....First time bad experience

Not at all user friendly. First thing I want to say. I used it sorry it is better to say seen it but was not satisfied with it operation.

The performance was seen better in the laptop. The DVD was playing well. But yet there was something wrong. The wrong was with the operation.

I was not satisfied with the operation it was giving. Everything was so slow and compound that it was hard to understand at the first glance.

The laptop is however carryable. It is light weighted. But it has no bios system. I was first using apple then and tried to go to bios. I dont remember what I pressed. Shift and apple button. And the bitter thing happened. The screen gone...I cant describe...Its like video debug error.

SO LAST COMMENT NOT RECOMMENDED.

I was surprised

macbook or no macbook

My little sister (17 years) bought one.

The design of this notebook is better then all laptops i have ever seen (with the logo lighting up).
But you have to be a macosx fan off course. It's not an entertainment laptop to watch movies (the screen is too small) or play games (the video card isn't that good) but it does the job it is meant to do as a macbook and the speed is ok. Batterie life is very very good. Price is 1000 dollars.

My first choice

I've been using PC's for over 10 years now so along the way I've tried my fair share of laptops. I've used Macs before (desktop model) and was fairly pleased with the experience. Even though that was years ago I still tell people how impressed I was with the Mac.

Now I have a Macbook and I wouldn't trade it for anything. The Macbook should be what other laptop companies look to for inspiration. It's slim, small, light, has decent battery life, built in wifi, comfortable keyboard and a screen that's easy on the eyes.

My only complaint about this laptop is the speak loudness. On many things even with the volume all the way up I struggle to hear sometimes. Often when I'm trying to show off a video or mp3 to friends/family we all have to crowd real close so everyone could hear it. I'll most likely have to get some sort of external speakers for the extra volume.

This is a great laptop and I highly recommend this laptop to anyone who will listen.

Macbook - Gotta Love it!

I love this laptop a lot.

I primarily use this laptop for school. It's easy to carry around, and it's pretty sleek and well designed.

This laptop comes with Core2Duo, 1gig of ram, and 250gigs for a hard drive. It's so easy to use, and with a price tag of about 1000 dollars, it's well worth the cost. The thing that I love most about this laptop is the applications that comes with it. Apple has award winning applications that they include in this laptop. I really enjoy using iMovie to make short videos. It's tools are simple to use, and a first time user can make professional videos with no problem.

Although the screen is only 13.3 inches (small compared to a lot of laptops these days), the display is extremely glossy, and movies and videos play well on it!

The built in wireless is great, it makes it easy to just pick up and go. I also really like the built in camera. I hate to go out to buy a webcam that is bad quality. With the macbook, you don't have to, and the webcam quality is really nice. I can talk to friends in other countries with ease.

Overall, this is a nice laptop to have for college, and to do work on. The range of applications is amazing, and the sleek design on the macbook is very well done. This is a relatively inexpensive laptop for great quality.

Apple iBook G3/500 (Dual USB)

I am using Apple 12" iBook G3/500 (Dual USB) and it's speed is great and the performance is amazing. But I want to tell you friends that it is not much recommended for graphics work like Corel Draw, Photoshop (latest version), Cadence (Chip Designing software), Matlab V7.2 and many others. The weight and size is too less according to older iBook versions. It is having two USB ports and the it also support VGA with very high sound quality as an ouput.

MacBook: one sexy, fantastic little machine

I've used Apple computers in the past - notably an old Apple II when I was around eight years old - but was pretty out of the Mac loop until my husband purchased a PowerBook some time ago. I loved it instantly, and when I went to get a new laptop, I got an iBook. Fabulous laptop, worked flawlessly (with a small memory upgrade, it was a bit too slow for my tastes) until the day the cat got tangled in the cord and knocked it off the coffee table.

The replacement was the MacBook I'm writing on now - Intel processor, 1GB memory, white, 13". I will never again have the cat-in-wire problem as well, since the new Mac laptops have a genius magnetic power cord system – a really cool feature.

The MacBook is a really great, versatile machine. It's speedy, responsive, and fun and easy to use. When I get on PCs at work I'm always wondering why I can't swing my mouse out to show the dock and see if I have email, swing the mouse up to open up the different windows, and check the weather with one mouse click. I find it beautiful to look at in design as well as function, and I have no issues with compatibility - I mainly use web browsers (Safari is decent, Firefox runs fine on the Mac), email, word processing (Word for Mac is actually magnitudes *better* than for the PC, I kid you not!), graphics, and watching videos (one complaint is that QuickTime - of all things, an Apple product! - was not properly installed on the computer so I've just put VLC on instead, which works great). Also, it has GREAT battery life (so long as you don't eat it all up with high CPU-using apps, it'll run for hours and hours without power).

Only other complaints are minimal things - I did like my 14" laptop, and it's a shame it only comes in 13", though I very much appreciate the sleeker design of this laptop to the iBook - in retrospect a very clunky design with a lot of wasted space, especially in the keyboard area - and the widescreen is very cool. The white definitely gets somewhat grimy, but not too bad. The iBook had issues with the letters wearing off the keys, but so far the MacBook is retaining its letters, and it has a nicer keyboard, though nothing compared to the MacBook Pro, which is virtually silent to type on. It could use to come with a little less stuff packed on it, and I have a couple of issues with where things are located and organized, but as it's customizable I've mainly figured out all the quirks and have things running about how I want them.

Overall? Really, really fantastic, and I'm only holding off the #10 rating because I've seen the MacBook Pro, and it is definitely a superior machine in a lot of little ways. However, it's far more expensive, and for your dollar, this MacBook is a very, very good buy. These laptops turned me into what comes across as an Apple fanatic - honest, I'm not, I'm very unimpressed with the usability of the iPod, for example - but frankly, once you go Mac, you'll never go back.
