ASUS G1S Reviews

Great bang for the buck

Review:

I did a lot of research to find good power for a reasonable amount of money, and I found the Asus G1S. I've been very pleased with it. You do have to get Vista, but so far I've only had a few problems with Vista, and it does have great eye candy. The G1S is powerful enough to run Vista smoothly.

Don't worry, it's easy to get the flashing green lights to turn off.

Great Laptop but lacking XP driver support

Don't get me wrong, I love this laptop. It's beautiful. It's powerful, great sense of style, compact, built to last and it's priced competitively to boot.

I really am in love.

However -- not everyone wants to or can switch to Vista, myself included. Upon startup, first boot, idling on the desktop, Vista was using *choke* 1GB of RAM. (Half the total physical memory!!) I was clear vista had to go and ASUS sure does not make it easy.

ASUS does not provide XP drivers but after a few hours of reading forums, I found that many users had used drivers from other ASUS products with complete success. I've since installed XP and every device is working perfectly.

You will find extremely useful instructions here

However annoying it may be, you do have to manually slipstream SATA drivers into your XP install.

This laptop is great... but ASUS, common, give us XP support -- Vista is a pile of s**t.

Solid

First off, I'm no techie...I'm just an average user who was looking to upgrade my laptop. I just bought a digital SLR camera and wanted a machine that could handle all the post-processing that needs to be done. My on-line research had narrowed me down to the Lenovo Thinkpad T61p or a Dell Latitude D830. Off I went to a bricks and mortar store.

I went to two different PCCyber stores in Ottawa. Both times, when I mentioned what I was looking for they suggested the Asus G1S. Both times they used the word "solid" to describe the machine. I was sold.

The machine is slick and looks great. It's super fast (at least a lot faster than my 4-year-old Dell Inspiron). And the lit-up green "eye" that sits below the keyboard is super-cool. Seriously, though, this is a "guy's" machine on the outside. But on the inside it's for the multi-tasking power user.

It's only been a week, but I'm in love with my new machine (especially since I learned how to turn of the other flashing green lights on the sides of the monitor).
